Weekly Report
for August 21, 2010

TODAY

Our cantor and soloist this morning is Marshall Macomber.

Altar Flowers -- During the month of August and through Labor Day in September, the altar sanctuary will be plainly decorated with a green plant rather than the full flower arrangements our Flower Guild provides during the year.

If you wish to sponsor a flower arrangement to commemorate some special event or in memory of loved ones, you may sign up for a future Sunday on the Flower Calendar in the narthex. If you have trouble locating the calendar please ask an usher to assist you.

COMMUNITY

Community Groups at ASA—Ascension & St. Agnes Community Groups meet regularly on Monday evenings and Thursday evenings. For more information, contact Matt Joseph (matthewrjoseph@yahoo.com) about the Monday Group. NOTE: The Thursday Night Group will be on summer hiatus until September.

Theology Book Club – The Theology Book Club will meet at 7:00 p.m. on the fifth Tuesday in the month, 31 August, in the dining room in the Parish House, to discuss the book Quarks, Chaos, and Christianity. Written by John Polkinghorne, a physicist and Anglican priest (who has preached in recent years at St. Paul’s K Street), the book examines the relationship between science and religion.

Light refreshment will be served and all are invited. Evening Prayer will precede the meeting at 6:45 in the Lady Chapel.

Diabetes Support Group
— The Diabetes Support Group will not have a meeting in September. The next scheduled meeting is Thursday, 14 October in the Parish House dining room at 7:00 pm. If you have any questions please contact Chuck Partridge (cpartridge@aota.org) or Susan Hawfield (shawfield@rebuildingtogethermc.org or 301-801-2961). All are welcome!
GETTING INVOLVED

Altar Call — Wouldn’t you enjoy a new way to serve in the parish? We would love to have you serve at the altar, either with the Servers’ Guild or Altar Guild. Members of the Servers’ Guild assist at the altar during high mass, and members of the Altar Guild prepare and care for the altar and its furnishings. Both are vital ministries in the parish. If you are interested, please speak to Victoria Ebell, Scott Merritt, Tony Nester, or Fr. Lane.

N Street Village -- The regularly scheduled time for our Outreach ministry at N Street Village is the last Monday of the month. Our next date will be Monday, 30 August. We encourage new volunteers to become a part of this ministry. For more information, please contact Chuck Bass, Fred Sutton, Eve Wilkins or Albert Bacon.

GENERAL INTEREST

Rector on Vacation -- Fr. Lane Davenport will be on vacation and away from the parish from 11 August through 1 September. Should you have an emergency pastoral need while he is away, please call the parish house or Fr. Randall Haycock (202.579.8776).

Organist at St. Margaret’s -- On Friday evening, 10 September 2010, at 8:00 p.m. in the sanctuary, Saint Margaret's Episcopal Church, 1820 Connecticut Ave, NW (Dupont Circle), will present organist Theodore M. Guerrant in “Musical Reflections in a Sacred Space," an hour of music remembering those whose lives were lost in the tragic September 11, 2001. This year's program, the ninth, will recreate the famous recital in Leipzig which took place on 6 August 1840, when Mendelssohn played Bach organ works not heard for 100 years, and is dedicated to the Glory of God and in loving memory of the late Col. Jeffrey B Jones who served his country tirelessly both as a peacemaker and in our national defense. Baskets are placed at the rear of the nave for donations to Charlie's Place, an outreach ministry of St. Margaret's, which feeds, clothes, and provides medical assistance for our homeless brothers and sisters in the Washington, DC area. A light reception will follow in the parish hall. For more information or directions see www.stmargaretsdc.org.

Intercessory Prayers -- One of the goals of the parish’s Pastoral Care Team is to encourage communication and care among our parishioners. When you have a request for prayer, are feeling bereft or would like to hear a friendly voice please contact Anne Lyn Welsh at 703.433.0939 or annelynwelsh@comcast.net.

Banns of Marriage — Hereby are published the Banns of Marriage between Colin Patrick Durkin of Downers Grove, Illinois and Meagan Elizabeth Bridges of Wagram, North Carolina. If any of you know just cause or just impediment, why these persons should not be joined together in Holy Matrimony, you are to declare it. This is the first time of asking.

Icon Writing Workshop -- The Rev. Peter Pearson will be conducting an icon writing workshop/retreat at Trinity Episcopal Church, St. Mary's City, over the Labor Day weekend. Classes will be held Saturday, 4 September (9 am - 5 pm), Sunday, 5 September (noon - 6 pm), and Monday, 6 September (9 am - 4 pm). The cost is $225.00 per person. All materials will be provided. The subject of the icon (painted in acrylic paints) will be Mary Magdalene. For more information or to register for the class, please contact Fr. John Ball, 301-862-4597 (office), or 240-925-0752 (cell).

Fr. Peter Pearson is an Episcopal priest, a master iconographer and author of two how-to books on icon writing. This will be his fourth workshop offered in St. Mary's City.

Overnight accommodations for out of town participants are available in nearby Lexington Park, or at Woodlawn Farm, a lovely waterfront B&B in Ridge, MD.

Plans for the Summer

A number of Parish activities scale back somewhat over the summer. This allows a time of respite from the sometimes hectic activities of the rest of the year. It also affords Parishioners the opportunity to reflect upon the contributions of the many dedicated staff and volunteers which become more apparent when their ministries slow down or go on hiatus over the summer. We hope that parishioners will also use this time to contemplate how they can become more actively involved in the various ministries of the Parish when full-scale activities resume in the fall. .

The following are among the activities that will be different between now and the Sunday after Labor Day:

Nursery Care during the 10:00 a.m. Mass will not be provided during the month of August For more information on the nursery, please contact Catherine Held at 202.544.8642.

Community Groups -- the Thursday Night Group will be on summer hiatus until September.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd—is on hiatus for the summer and will start 12 September 2010.

Flower Guild— During the month of August the High Altar will be decorated simply with a green plant or ferns.

Coffee Hour —Over the summer the Coffee Hour Team will provide a simpler menu including coffee, juice, and donuts or cookies. Anyone who feels inspired to bring extra goodies is certainly welcome and encouraged to do so.

Music Program — Our Choir completed its regular season on the Feast of Corpus Christi. The choir is scheduled to return on Sunday, 12 September, The Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

During the absence of the full choir Dr. Burdick, our Organist/Choirmaster, has arranged for individual choir members to rotate serving as cantors and soloists, singing a series of excerpts from Bach Cantatas each Sunday at the Offertory and Communion.

Your Pledge — Please remember that the expenses of the Parish continue during the summer. If you plan to be away it would be greatly appreciated if you could continue to send in your offering. The mailing address of the church may be found on the back cover of this bulletin.
