Benedictus es, Domine.

BLESSED art thou, O Lord God of our fathers:* praised and exalted above all for ever.

Blessed art thou for the Name of thy Majesty:* praised and exalted above all for ever.

Blessed art thou in the temple of thy holiness:* praised and exalted above all for ever.

Blessed art thou that beholdest the depths, and dwellest between the Cherubim: * praised and exalted above all forever.

Blessed art thou on the glorious throne of thy kingdom: * praised and exalted above all for ever.

Blessed art thou in the firmament of heaven: * praised and exalted above all for ever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Confitemini.

O GIVE thanks unto the LORD, for he is gracious: * and his mercy endureth for ever.

O give thanks unto the God of all gods: * for his mercy endureth for ever.

O thank the LORD of all lords: * for his mercy endureth for ever.

Who only doeth great wonders: * for his mercy endureth for ever.

Who by his excellent wisdom made the heavens: * for his mercy endureth for ever.

Who laid out the earth above the waters: * for his mercy endureth for ever.

Who hath made great lights: * for his mercy endureth for ever:

The sun to rule the day: * for his mercy endureth for ever;

The moon and the stars to govern the night: * for his mercy endureth for ever.

Who smote Egypt, with their firstborn: * for his mercy endureth for ever; And brought out Israel from among them: * for his mercy endureth for ever;

With a mighty hand and stretched-out arm: * for his mercy endureth for ever

Who divided the Red Sea in two parts: * for his mercy endureth for ever;

And made Israel to go through the midst of it: * for his mercy endureth for ever.

But as for Pharaoh and his host, he overthrew them in the Red Sea: * for his mercy endureth for ever.

Who led his people through the wilderness: * for his mercy endureth for ever.

Who smote great kings: * for his mercy endureth for ever;

Yea, and slew mighty kings: * for his mercy endureth for ever:

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Flowers for the Day

The flowers in the High Altar Sanctuary this morning are given by Louis L. Fink to the greater glory of God and in remembrance of Ethel Jean Fink.
Rest eternal grant unto Ethel, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon her.
May her soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Farewell to John Overall

Please join us today, to say farewell to John Overall as he departs our parish to move to Baltimore.  All are invited.

Acknowledgments from Dr. Mardirosian

Today marks the final choral high mass until 9 September and it is an appropriate moment to recognize the dedicated work and artistry of the musicians who weekly sing some of the world's most beautiful and transcendent music to the glory of God and the uplifting of souls.

If you see any of the following individuals today, please consider thanking them in person: Maryanna Henkart, Linda Ewbank, Becca Schendel, Elisabeth Meyers, Jessieca McNamara, Ann Talty, Chris Riggs, Miriam Radakovich, Chuck Bass, Chris Kelly, Marshall Macomber, Gregory Stuart, Brian Kim, and George Cervantes. Joining these regular singers are a corps of veteran substitutes: Shana Olshan, Anne Harrison, Lee Carpenter, Amy Schendel, Kerry Wingell, Eric Wagner, and Timothy Kendall.

Special thanks go to Assistant Music Director, Gary Seighman whose invaluable help extends from conducting the choir, to preparing the graphics of the psalms for the bulletin each week, to maintaining the extensive music library, to producing and marketing CD's.  Gary and Marshall Macomber have been the principal cantors at mass along with Becca Schendel and Elisabeth Meyers.

As a bitter sweet note, several singers are leaving the parish choir. Becca Schendel, who works administering study abroad programming at the University of Maryland, is reclaiming some time for herself, but promises that she will be available for occasional substitute duty. Brian Kim has left Washington and his music teaching position at the Maret School in order to begin graduate study at the University of Southern California in music for film and media. He promises that when he wins his first Oscar, that there will be a "shout out" for his friends here!

To borrow and modify slightly the words from Ecclesiasticus 31:32, "All these rely on their voices, and are skillful in their own work. Without them, no city can be inhabited..."

Thank you from Fr. Sam

Thank you for the generous gift the vestry and the congregation as a whole gave to our family upon the occasion of my ordination to the diaconate.  I was delighted because the gift allowed our whole family to fly to Boston for the ordination rather than spending eight hours in a mini-van.  We thank God for the friendships we have made at ASA and the myriad ways you all minister to our family.  We are humbled and honored to be a part of this community, and I look forward to discovering what God will do with and through our parish family over the next two years.  Thank you for your gift and, as always, for your prayers.

Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament

This morning at 9:30 a.m., the Parish Chapter of the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament will assemble in the Lady Chapel for devotions.  We will recite the Litany of the Blessed Sacrament, the Divine Praises, the Anima Christi, and John 6:47-57.  All are welcome to attend this devotion.

No Bible Study today

The weekly Bible Study lead by Scott Merrit will return next Sunday and will follow the Coffee Hour.

THIS WEEK

Alpha continues at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday

The Alpha Course, a practical, low-key introduction to Christianity with dinner and discussion, continues this week at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish House Dining Room.  Alpha is informal, friendly, unpressured and an ideal way to introduce family, friends or colleagues to the basics of Christianity.  Everyone is invited, so please contact Renee Wood (reneecwood@hotmail.com) or Michael Vreeland at 202.347.8161 or mwvreeland1@verizon.net if you are interested.

Rector out of town this week

Fr. Lane will be away this week attending a clergy leadership conference in Connecticut.  If you have an urgent pastoral need while he is away, please call Fr Sam or the parish office at (202) 347-8161.

Congregational rehearsal for the Callaway Mass music

After next Sunday, 24 June, the choir will begin its summer leave, returning 9 September.  While they are away, the music at High Mass will be sung by the congregation.  The setting initially will be the familiar Missa de Sancta Maria Magdalena, by Healey Willan.  On 15 July, we’ll restore to our repertoire the Communion Service in D by Paul Callaway.  This mass setting was originally written for the former parish of St. Agnes.  To re-introduce us to this music, we will have a parish music rehearsal on 1 July at the Coffee Hour after the High Mass.  In addition, there will be a second rehearsal on 8 July in the church after the High Mass.  Please don’t miss these opportunities to enhance our Sunday worship with full musical participation from the congregation.

UPCOMING

Service Opportunities

For many years, John Overall has provided multiple services to support our worship, many of which are ‘behind the scenes’ in addition to his more visible role in the liturgy.  As we say good-bye to him at the end of the month, many service opportunities will become available.  We are eager to welcome your participation in any of a variety of ministries essential to our worship.

Flower Guild

We are establishing a new flower guild.  Steve Smith is going to organize the floral decorating of the church (Sunday by Sunday as well as for special occasions such as Christmas and Easter).  He will be setting up a rota as well as making himself available to teach flower arranging.  We can also arrange for people to take flower arranging courses.  If you have (or would like to develop) a gift for working with flowers and making our church beautiful, please contact Steve Smith at 703.212.4749 or ses44_@hotmail.com.

Whether you can help decorate only at Easter and Christmas, or you can work on a team once every few Saturdays, all are welcome, amateurs and experts alike.

Sacristan

We are looking to appoint a new sacristan.  The sacristan is responsible for ordering and maintaining an inventory of regular sacristy supplies (e.g., communion wafers, wine, candles, incense) as well as ordering seasonal needs (e.g., Paschal and Advent candles).  If you are interested in this position, please speak to Fr. Lane.

Altar Guild

We are always looking for people who would like to serve the parish by preparing the altar and vestments for mass.  If you are interested, please speak to Victoria Ebell at 301.322.6157 or Vicky Pollina at 703.475.4576.

Altar Server

We also welcome all who are interested in serving at the altar, whether it be for Sunday’s high mass or for low masses during the week as well as on Sundays.  If you are interested in serving at the altar, please speak to Fr. Lane or Scott Merritt at 202.502.8027, scott.merritt@ferc.gov

Daily Mass on Federal Holidays

The parish’s daily mass on Wednesday, 4 July, will be at 10:00 a.m., not at 6:30 p.m. as usual on Wednesdays.

Fr. Lane is considering changing the times for daily masses on Federal holidays (New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day and the day after Thanksgiving) to the morning, perhaps 9:30 a.m. or to 10:00 a.m.  If you have any thoughts about this change, then please let him know.

Bishop’s Appeal
The Fourth Annual Bishop’s Appeal for contributions to support the diocese's 2007 operating budget has begun.  Created in 2004, the Bishop’s Appeal allows parishioners and other interested parties to contribute directly to the support of the diocese, and it has raised an average of approximately $100,000 per year.  This year's goal is $175,000.  If you would like to contribute, you may do so online by visiting the diocesan Web site (edow.org/donate).

Preparation of New Edition of Parish Membership Directoryand New Parishioner Information Forms

Please help our parish administrator prepare an updated edition of our Parish Membership Directory, which will be published in a few weeks.  In the Undercroft today, you will find a listing of what is currently on file.  Please confirm that you are included in the listing and that the information given is correct.  Make any changes directly to your Directory information or, if you are not currently included, on the blank space at the end of the directory.  Please take a moment to complete one of our new Parishioner Information Forms, as well.  If you have questions, please call Michael Vreeland, our parish administrator, at the parish office.

Eucharistic Visitors

While Fr. Davenport brings the Blessed Sacrament to the sick and anoints them, especially when hospital visits are necessary, other parishioners also have a Eucharistic ministry in the parish.  If you are ill or shut in and would like to have the Blessed Sacrament brought to you, please contact Barbara Mendoza (barbaram@ nonprofitadvancement.org) or Michael Vreeland in the parish office: 202.347.8161 (mwvreeland1@verizon.net).

Intercessory Prayers

One of the goals of the parish’s recently formed Pastoral Care Team is to encourage communication and care among our parishioners.  We want to know if you are ill, are about to have a baby, have lost a loved one, are facing surgery or are living through any other of life's challenges.  In this space each Sunday, we will request prayers for your intention.  We will provide only as much detail as you would like us to provide.  When you have a request for prayer, are feeling bereft or would like to hear a friendly voice please contact Anne Lyn Welsh (annelynwelsh@adelphia.net) and let her know.
