Our Patroness According to holy legend, Agnes lived in Rome during the 4th century. As a young virgin of about 13 years, she attracted a number of suitors who were charmed by her beauty and sought to wed her. But she refused them all, asserting that she could have no spouse but the Lord Jesus. Her frustrated suitors some say it was the father of a young man whom Agnes spurned publicized her Christianity. Her punishment was exposure in a brothel. "Awed by her presence," reports the Encyclopedia Britannica, "all but one of the Roman youths left her untouched; in his attempt to violate her, the sole attacker was struck blind, whereupon she healed him with prayer." She suffered no harm in the brothel; but later, during Diocletian's persecution of Christians, she was murdered. According to tradition, she was buried beside the Via Nomentana. Saint Agnes, one of the most revered of the Roman martyrs, is patron saint of girls and of our parish. Holy Church celebrates her feast on January 21. On that day, two lambs are blessed in the Church of Santa Agnese in Rome; and their wool is used to make the pallia sent to archbishops as marks of their authority. Holy Agnes, pray for us.
